Sunday Longplay - Gunstar Heroes (Sega Genesis) - Expert Mode

This week on Sunday Longplay, it's been a long time since I played a Sega Genesis game for this series, but let's get back into it with one of the best run-and-gun games on the platform, Gunstar Heroes.

Gunstar Heroes was the first game made by Treasure, a game development studio made up of former Konami employees who wanted to explore original ideas and free themselves from Konami's reliance on sequels. They would later go on to make other hits like Sin and Punishment, Radiant Silvergun, and Ikaruga.

Gunstar Heroes is a frantic run-and-gun game similar to Contra, but with a few extra twists. The first four stages can be tackled in any order similarly to Mega Man, and the stages incorporate several different formats including helicopter combat, a mine cart ride, a side-scrolling shmup stage in the endgame kind of like Gradius, and there's even a board game in one level.

There are four weapon types in this game: a machine gun, a flamethrower, a lightning gun, and a homing shot. You can pick up two of these at a time, switch between them, and even combine their abilities together. You also have a couple of melee attacks including a slide move and the ability to throw enemies.
