The Supreme Court has begun hearing a petition filed by the West Bengal government challenging the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the State. The Mamata Banerjee-led government has raised concerns that the revision process could lead to the wrongful deletion of genuine voters’ names.
During the hearing, the State sought urgent directions to stop name deletions, scrap the SIR exercise, rely on existing voter lists, simplify verification procedures, and allow Aadhaar as valid identity proof. The Supreme Court observed that voters are also served individual notices and stressed that the key issue is ensuring no eligible voter is disenfranchised. The hearing is ongoing.
