(12 Jul 2019) True sneaker heads will get the opportunity to expand their collection as Sotheby's in New York holds its first sneaker auction.
These aren't just any old sneakers but 100 of the rarest, most-coveted sneakers around, including the Nike "Moon Shoe" where only 12 were produced.
They were designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman in 1972 for the Olympic trials. He used a waffle iron to make a handmade waffle tread on the sole.
The shoes are expected to sell for as much as $160,000.
Another highlight: two pairs of sneakers inspired by "Back to the Future." The shoes, released in 2011 and 2016, were made to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Both models light up but the later version is self-lacing.
The auction also features a special sneaker for fans of the New York Yankees. There's a pair of the blue suede Nike Derek Jeter shoes, made to commemorate his retirement in 2014.
Less than 40 pairs of the Derek Jeters were created and the starting bid is $30,000.
Bidding opened Thursday (11 JULY 2019) and runs through July 23.
