What is Reported Speech? Reported speech is a way of telling someone what another person said without quoting their exact words. Instead of repeating what they said word for word, we summarize or change their words to fit into our own sentence.

What Do We Do in Reported Speech?

Change Pronouns: We often change the pronouns to match the perspective of the person reporting the speech.

Adjust Time Expressions: We change words that refer to time to match the timing of the report.

Use Reporting Verbs: Common reporting verbs include "said," "told," "asked," etc.

Backshift in Tenses. When reporting speech, we often move the tense of the verb back in time. This is called backshifting.
