Skull talk | Dinocrcuta gigantea. A prehistoric, hyena-like beast the size of a bear.

Описание к видео Skull talk | Dinocrcuta gigantea. A prehistoric, hyena-like beast the size of a bear.

Hello everyone.

In this video I talk about the prehistoric, extinct Dinocrocuta gigantea from the perspective of its cranial anatomy and evolutionary history. What does it mean, why it looks the way it does, what its teeth look like and what they were used for.

Dinocrocuta gigantea represents the epitome of a lineage of hyena like feliform carnivors called the Precrocutidae, that evolved into the very same ecological nich, role and function as modern hyenas.

Dincrocuta was a widespread and successful carnivore, ranging from Greece across Asia and into China, where it preyed on a wide array of elephant, rhino, hippo and other large herbivores.

Its skull is testament to the shattering power of its jaws that it used not only to intimidate sabertoothed cats and steal their kills but also to activley hunt its own food.

Dinocrocuta is not well known outside mammal paleontology circles. I find that odd, since it is very much comparable in might, power, charisma, intrigue and awe to the infamous dinosaur superstar Tyrannosaurus rex.

This skull is a museum quality cast and can be found on prehistoricstore.com.

I thank you for watching this video and encourage you to.
