“Galway Bay” is one of the most beloved Irish folk songs, evoking nostalgia, pride, and longing for home. Written in 1942 by Dr. Arthur Colahan, an Irish physician and neurologist who endured mustard gas during World War I, the song marries poetic imagery with the emotional depth of exile and remembrance. Colahan, born in Enniskillen and raised in Galway, was a talented musician as well as a doctor. While living and practicing medicine in Leicester, UK, he penned “Galway Bay,” perhaps as a personal hymn to the homeland he could not fully return to.

The song found worldwide fame when Bing Crosby recorded a version in 1947. Crosby’s rendition softened some of Colahan’s more politically charged lines — for example, changing “a language that the English do not know” to “a language that the strangers do not know.” Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the recording struck a chord with audiences. It spent 12 weeks on the American charts and reached the top three. For Irish emigrants living abroad during a time of hardship, the song became a vessel of memory, connecting them back to the land, people, and traditions they had left behind.

Its cultural reach grew even further when “Galway Bay” appeared in John Ford’s 1950 classic film The Quiet Man, cementing its place in both Irish and international popular culture. Today it is sung in pubs, family gatherings, concerts, and festivals around the world — a touchstone of shared identity.

My arrangement follows the folk tradition rather than a classical approach. It’s perhaps surprising how often my Irish band is asked to perform this song. Listeners still find themselves drawn to its imagery: barefoot children playing on the Claddagh, women making hay in the meadows, the scent of heather on the wind, the warmth of a turf fire at dusk. For many, it continues to be more than just a song — it is a vision of heaven across the Irish Sea.
