In today's day and age, there are a lot of buy and sell apps that are popping up, like Let Go, Offer Up, and even Facebook Marketplace. Wherever there is money to be made, there are scammers who will try to capitalize and fleece good people out of their money. In this video I share about my interaction with a scammer and the steps I took to verify that it was a scam. Again, no one single factor that I list guarantee that it is a scam, but taken as a whole, it became very obvious that it was.


The red flags that I saw that indicated this was a scam were as follows:
1. An expensive (over $500) item was being offered for free.
2. The person who posted it wasn't the owner of the item.
3. The person who posted did not have a verified account and had no reviews or selling history.
4. The person who owned the item was nowhere near my geographical area, so I'd have to pay to have the item shipped.
5. The person selling the item wanted me to use the family and friends option on paypal which removes buyer protections.
6. The person's e-mail address turned up negative for results.
7. Paypal wanted to tack on an additional fee for sending the money, which it only does on international payments.


Scammers have a lot of techniques that they use, so this list isn't all encompassing. The important thing to remember is that if it doesn't feel right, back out of the situation.
