Описание к видео Cotswold Canals - Cathedral Of Cloth - September 2021 version

Stroudwater Navigation, Ebley.
(amended version of film September 2021).
A visit to Ebley Wharf in May 2021, filming and experimenting with an Osmo Pocket2 for the first time, and a single drone flight, became a larger project than expected. It is said that a camera is a tool that allows you to better understand what you are photographing, which sounds obvious at first. Until I started to edit this film, I had forgotten my dismay as a child when I could no longer "safely" catch sticklebacks and tadpoles in a fishing net at Ebley. Blocks of stone and building debris were being dumped in the canal by Ebley swingbridge, leaving small fish trapped in dwindling pools of water. I had also forgotten the beautiful metal entrance gate and unusual stile south of the mill, which would have been the main entrance for Sir S. S. Marling. When editing, I remembered seeing the remains of metal tramway rails close to a hedge, and leading down to the Oil Mill. The communication control weir at Ebley with metal railings, which in the 1950s still had the original metal hoops on draw rods for lifting short paddles in stone guides (those guides are still in situ), had been built as part of an agreement between Sir S S Marling and the Canal Company for a side opening to a short navigable waterway to Kimmin's Mill, then operating as a Grist (grain) mill in Dudbridge. As a youngster, I could never manage to lift the paddles. The level of canal and river were very similar before the 1957 flood prevention scheme. It may also have been of general benefit to Ebley Mill, by gaining surplus water from the canal. An older mill, dating from the 1300s had stood on the north side of the canal until 1776, when the second Act of Parliament was passed for the construction of the Stroudwater Navigation. Old Ordnance Survey maps clearly show the "Winding Hole" to the north of the canal, which would have been necessary for full length vessels to turn into the river. Most likely, this winding hole was the remains of the bend in the original course of the River Frome before the canal was built. It was still evident in the 1960s, with long grass and reeds growing there, and shows clearly in the 1825 painting. The 1973 transparencies of Oil Mills bridge were taken on the same day I had been photographing the demolition of Ebley Chapel.
Dame Margaret Kate Weston DBE, FMA, patron of the Stroudwater Textile Trust, is seen waving to a new tug bearing her name and launched at Dudbridge. Dame Margaret, a former director of the Science Museum, was instrumental in establishing the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television (now the National Media Museum) in Bradford,
