Most people subscribe to the notion that pennies are made of pure copper. But in 1982, the fast-rising price of copper forced the U.S. Mint to change the composition of the penny to primarily zinc. Now pennies are made of 98% zinc and a 2% super thin copper coating. One cool difference between zinc and copper is that zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid but copper doesn’t. So if I file a some notches into some pennies, I can expose the zinc. Then, if I drop them into the acid, they react to produce hydrogen gas and zinc chloride. After a while, they start bobbing up and down and they eventually float. When I pull the pennies out of the acid in a few hours and rinse them off, only the super thin copper coating remains. It’s amazing how light and delicate they are now.
