This was an assignment to see if I could add a song ( as apposed to just music) to a piece of film.

The film dealt with the separation and segregation of immigrants and natives in a northern town in England. Upon being given the brief, immediately thought about the Woody Guthrie song this ‘Land Is Your Land’ and wondered if I could do an update of the song. It never really worked but what i decided to do is compose a completely new song but use most of the original lyrics, substituting the American town and city references with British points of reference.

Once I had completed the song, I felt that there was a natural point in the film clip when it should start. That meant that at the start of the clip, there was footage with no soundtrack at all. I dubbed in a crown , with some folly for fire and the gun /missile launch, and composed some melancholic strings parts to reflect the mood change as shown by the crowd as they watched the destruction of the straw statue.

Having put the song where i wanted it, I realised that the film finished. it seems somewhat anticlimactic and so I decided to add some fake credits form another films, so as to make a complete end film sequence. i used the credits roll from a film called ‘Remember Me’ and spliced the two films together appropriately.

This then allowed me to have the song continue to play of there credits, making it seem more dramatic and climatic. It also allowed me to compose a short piece for string to continue over the credits after the song had finished. Finally, with a few minutes remaining, I did a short clip of the original Woody Guthrie version of the song so as to have a bookend with the new version, helping to thematically link the whole clip together.

I’m really pleased with how the end result came out. I would Imagine that most people would not actually be aware they were watching the two films spliced together, and the whole project sits very nicely as a piece of work.
