RATRI SUKTAM FROM RIG VEDA (10-127)

॥ अथ वेदोक्तं रात्रिसूक्तम् ॥

ॐ रात्रीत्याद्यष्टर्चस्य सूक्तस्यकुशिकः सौभरो रात्रिर्वा
भारद्वाजो ऋषिः, रात्रिर्देवता,गायत्री छन्दः, देवीमाहात्म्यपाठे विनियोगः।

ॐ (Om) रात्री (Ratri) इति (thus) आदि (and others) अष्ट (eight) ऋचस्य (of the stanzas) सूक्तस्य (of the hymn) कुशिकः (Kushika) सौभरः (Saubhari) रात्रिः (Ratri) वा (or)
भारद्वाजः (Bharadvaja) ऋषिः (the sage) । रात्रिः (Ratri) देवता (the deity) । गायत्री (Gayatri) छन्दः (the meter) । देवीमाहात्म्य (of the Devi Mahatmya) पाठे (in the recitation) विनियोगः (the application) ॥

Summary
Of this hymn of eight stanzas, beginning with 'Ratri,' the seer is Kushika Saubhari or Ratri Bharadvaja, the deity is Ratri, and the meter is Gayatri. It is used in the recitation of the Devi Mahatmya.

ॐ रात्री व्यख्यदायती पुरुत्रा देव्यक्षभिः।
विश्वा अधि श्रियोऽधित॥1॥

ॐ (Om) रात्री (Ratri) वि (away) अख्यत् (she has revealed) आ (she has come) यती (coming) पुरुत्रा (in many places) देवी (the goddess) अक्षभिः (with her eyes) ।
विश्वा (all) अधि (over) श्रियः (the glories) अधित (she has held) ॥ 1॥

Summary
Om. The goddess Night has come, revealing all in many places with her eyes. She has taken hold of all the glories.

ओर्वप्रा अमर्त्यानिवतो देव्युद्वतः।
ज्योतिषा बाधते तमः॥2॥

ऊर्ध्वा (upwards) अप्रा (filled) अमर्त्या (immortal) नि (downwards) वतः (whose paths) देवी (the goddess) उत् (upwards) वतः (whose paths) ।
ज्योतिषा (with her light) बाधते (she drives away) तमः (the darkness) ॥ 2॥

Summary
The immortal goddess has pervaded both the high and low paths. With her light, she drives away the darkness.

निरु स्वसारमस्कृतोषसं देव्यायती।
अपेदु हासते तमः॥3॥

निः (out) उ (indeed) स्वसारम् (her sister) अस्कृत (she has made) उषसम् (the dawn) देव्या (by the goddess) आयती (coming) ।
अप (away) इत् (indeed) उ (away) हासते (she shines) तमः (the darkness) ॥ 3॥

Summary
The coming goddess has indeed sent forth her sister, the Dawn. The darkness has indeed fled away.

सा नो अद्य यस्या वयं नि ते यामन्नविक्ष्महि।
वृक्षे न वसतिं वयः॥4॥

सा (she) नः (us) अद्य (today) यस्याः (of whom) वयं (we) नि (down) ते (your) यामन (in the journey) अविक्ष्महि (we have entered) ।
वृक्षे (on a tree) न (like) वसतिं (a dwelling) वयः (birds) ॥ 4॥

Summary
May she protect us today in her journey, just as birds enter a tree for their dwelling.

नि ग्रामासो अविक्षत नि पद्वन्तो नि पक्षिणः।
नि श्येनासश्चिदर्थिनः॥5॥

नि (down) ग्रामासः (the villages) अविक्षत (they have settled down) नि (down) पद्वन्तः (the walking ones) नि (down) पक्षिणः (the birds) ।
नि (down) श्येनासः (the hawks) च (and) इत् (indeed) अर्थिनः (the seekers) ॥ 5॥

Summary
The villages have settled down, the walking ones have settled down, and the birds have settled down. And indeed, the hawks and the seekers have also settled down.

यावया वृक्यं वृकं यवय स्तेनमूर्म्ये।
अथा नः सुतरा भव॥6॥

यावय (drive away) वृक्यं (the female wolf) वृकं (the wolf) यवय (drive away) स्तेनं (the thief) ऊर्म्ये (O wave-like) ।
अथ (then) नः (for us) सुतरा (easy to cross) भव (be) ॥ 6॥

Summary
Drive away the female wolf and the wolf. Drive away the thief, O wave-like one. And then be easy for us to cross.

उप मा पेपिशत्तमः कृष्णं व्यक्तमस्थित।
उष ऋणेव यातय॥7॥

उप (near) मा (me) पेपिशत् (it has spread) तमः (the darkness) कृष्णं (black) व्यक्तं (manifested) अस्थित (it has come) ।
उषः (O Dawn) ऋणा (like a debt) इव (like) यातय (you have caused to go away) ॥ 7॥

Summary
The black and manifested darkness has spread over me. O Dawn, you have caused it to go away like a debt.

उप ते गा इवाकरं वृणीष्व दुहितर्दिवः।
रात्रि स्तोमं न जिग्युषे॥8॥

उप (near) ते (you) गाः (the cows) इव (like) अकरं (I have made) वृणीष्व (choose) दुहितः (O daughter) दिवः (of the sky) ।
रात्रि (O Ratri) स्तोमं (a hymn) न (like) जिग्युषे (to the one who has conquered) ॥ 8॥

Summary
I have made these hymns for you like cows. O daughter of the sky, O Night, accept them, just as one accepts a hymn from a conqueror.
