VHF vs UHF - What's the difference
What is Digital Radio?
What is licence free radio?

VHF
Very high frequency (VHF) is the ITU designation for the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves (radio waves) from 30 to 300 megahertz (MHz), with corresponding wavelengths of ten meters to one meter. They travel approximately upto 160 km.

#VHF radio waves propagate mainly by using the line-of-sight communication and that's why in maritime communication,air navigation systems the mostly used frequency is VHF. As a result,they are blocked by hills and mountains.

Common uses for radio waves in the VHF band are:-
Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB)
FM radio broadcasting
Television broadcasting

The VHF band is the first band at which efficient transmitting antennas are small enough that they can be mounted on vehicles and portable devices, so the band is used for two-way land mobile radio systems, such as walkie-talkies, and two way radio communication with aircraft (Air band) and ships (marine radio). Occasionally, when conditions are right, VHF waves can travel long distances by troposphere ducting due to refraction by temperature gradients in the atmosphere.

#UHF
Ultra high frequency (U#HF) is the ITU designation for radio frequencies in the range between 300 megahertz (MHz) and 3000 megahertz or 3 gigahertz (GHz), also known as the decimetre band as the wavelengths range from one meter to one tenth of a meter (one decimetre). As mentioned they work spectacular when used in any multiplex area because the signals are so powerful that can penetrate through bricks.

Since the wavelengths of UHF waves are comparable to the size of buildings, trees, vehicles and other common objects, reflection and diffraction from these objects can cause fading due to multi path propagation, especially in built-up urban areas. Occasionally when conditions are right, UHF radio waves can travel long distances by troposphere ducting as the atmosphere warms and cools throughout the day.

If you already have radios and are looking to add units to your set, remember the rule:-
BAND=BAND
VHF=VHF
UHF=UHF
