This is how I built my first, 5 frame nucleus box (nuc). You can build your own, it's simpler than you think. This is an easy way to help keeping cost of bee keeping down.

I used 3/4” plywood for this project. You can used any type of plywood or sub-flooring as long as it it not treated. If you have untreated scrap wood, that will work as well. I do recommend painting for protection from the environment.

I used Gorilla wood glue ultimate. I like that is fast drying and water resistant. You can use any wood glue that is water proof. There was a few small gaps between boards. To fix this I used the wood glue to line the inside seams of the box. This added an additional seal.

I used star drive 1 1/4” flat head wood screws. You can use any type of screws, nails or fasteners. There is a little give on the length of fasteners. Just be sure that the fasters are between 1” and 1 1/2”.

By labeling each piece after cutting, assembling the box will be easier. For the front and back of the box marking the top of each piece saves on confusion, when making the notches.

It is helpful to start assembling with the back piece and a side. And then place the front piece, the bottom and then the other side piece.

The dimensions of the pieces:
Front: 7 1/2” X 9 7/8” with a notch at the top of 5/8” X 3/8”
Back: 7 1/2” X 10 1/2” with a notch at the top of 5/8” X 3/8”
Handles: 1” X 7 1/2” (2)
Sides: 19 7/8” X 11 3/8” (2)
Bottom: 21” X 7 1/2”
Top: 21 7/8” X 9 1/4”
Cleats: 1’ X 9” (2)
