In Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the “2 hippos near Recluses’ River Downstream” is exactly what it sounds like: two standard hippopotamus enemies in a marshy pond area downriver from the Recluses’ River Downstream Site of Grace, and each one drops a Scadutree Fragment, for a total of two.

From the Site of Grace, follow the river downstream through the waterfall-and-ledge descent toward the Abyssal Woods route. You’re aiming for the wide, forested wetlands section that’s described as the “second-to-last” waterfall/plateau stretch before you transition deeper toward the Abyssal Woods path. When the terrain opens up into a broad pond with enough space for terrible life choices, you’re there, and the two hippos will be waiting to explain personal boundaries to you.

If you kill only one and leave, or one wanders off and you lose track, just rest and run it again. The whole point of these enemies is to waste your time, so you might as well be efficient about it.
