Thousands without heating in breakaway Transnistria, after Russian gas cut | Kerry Longhurst

After the halt of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, the separatist region of Transnistria now appears to be the biggest loser. Formally part of Moldova, it is a de facto independent state, controlled by former KGB officers turned businessmen-politicians. This patch of land along the Dnister River, home to some 500,000 people and functioning since the fall of the Soviet Union only thanks to Russian support and shady arms deals, has been teetering on the brink of economic collapse since its creation. We spoke with Kerry Longhurst, a professor at Collegium Civitas, about the future of the region and its impact on Moldova's future.
