4 Heron Mark2 deployed at Forward Airbase

India has contracted for procurement of 4 Heron MK2 UAVs with Israel. As per 13th August report from ANI, 4 Heron Mark2 UAVs have been inducted by Indian Air Force and are deployed at Forward Airbase in Norther Sector. The induction of new Heron MK2 has greatly boosted the India’s ISR capability in the Norther region.

The squadron operating the Heron Mark2 drones is being called as the ‘Warden of the North’ and has been carrying out surveillance missions along with borders with both China and Pakistan. The drones have been equipped with satellite communication links and are the most advanced drones in the Indian armed forces.

The new Heron MK2 is a MALE UAV which can reach an altitude of 35,000 feet, speed of 140 knots and remain in the air for 45 consecutive hours. It is equipped with Satellite Communications for Beyond Line-of-Sight ranges.

These UAVs are capable of illuminating targets from long range which can be destroyed by fighter jet using long range laser guided weapons. The longer endurance of UAV ensures multiple missions and multiple sectors can be achieved in a single sortie. IAF will be able to cover both adversaries in a single sortie using Heron MK2. These drones are also being weaponized with air to ground missiles. The IAF pilot of Heron MK2 has told that these UAVs can operate in sub-zero temperatures in any weather condition.
