Uttarakhand, India, popularly known as “Devbhoomi” (“देवभूमी” – “Land of the Gods”) is enriched with rich culture, heritage and ancient history that could date as far back as the epic of Mahabharata.
It is believed that Sage Vyasa dictated this epic and Lord Ganesha (the Elephant God) wrote down this epic in this Holy land. It is on this land – at Swargarohini, beyond Satopanth Lake - where Pandavas shred their bodily forms and ascended to the Heaven. Satopanth Lake, thus has a peculiar significance in Indian mythology.
Situated at 4,402 meter above sea level, Satopanth Tal (‘lake’) is a triangular shaped lake with crystal clear emerald waters, with a perimeter of about 1 km. It is believed that Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva- the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer of the Universe – meditate at each of the three corners of this lake and take a holy bath in Satopanth Lake on Ekadashi (11th day of each half of the month in the Vedic lunar calendar).
Rich with such beliefs, the Trek to Satopanth Lake is as fascinating as the legends around it. The trek route starts from Mana (last village on Indo-Tibet Border) 3 kms off Badrinath – the very famous Lord Vishnu Temple (one amongst ‘CharDham’).
You also cross the magnificent Vasudhara Falls on the trek route. It is believed that the water of this falls only on the purest blessed souls and drifts away from those who have sinned.
The Satopanth lake, an earthly replica of the Kshir-Sagar (sea of milk), is set in the midst of yawning glaciers and towering peaks. One is overwhelmed and held spellbound to see the astonishing surroundings and unparalleled splendor of nature.
Some noteworthy Himalayan peaks that you see on this trek route are Balakun Peak, Kuber Top, Mt. Neelkanth and Mt. Swargarohini. Witnessing stature of Neelkanth and grandeur of Swargarohini is an experience of a life- time.
