The Raybestos '53 Chevy 3600 has several custom modifications. Jeff Schwartz of Schwartz Performance Inc walks us through them.

Bed:

The bed sides of these old pickups are normally hollow on the ends. To give it a more finished look, Jeff and his crew tig welded a piece of metal on the end to cap it off.

The original '53 Chevy 3600 had stake holes along the sides of the bed sides. This allowed for stacking of wooden stakes on the bed sides so that you could haul more cargo. Since the restored pickup won't be a work truck, pieces of metal were welded over the stake holes and smoothed out to give the top of the bed sides a clean look.

The Chevy pickup tailgate has spring-loaded latches. The latches are on the inside of the tailgate and make it very easy to open and close it.

The gas tanks on the '53 Chevy 3600's were located in the passenger compartment behind the seats. As you can imagine, that isn't the safest place for a gas tank. On the restored Chevy, the tank was moved to the back of the truck behind the axle.

In order to fit the wide BF Goodrich tires, the wheel wells were mini tubbed. The bed itself was made with a stained oak wood with a polyurethane coating. The bed strips are stainless steel to make sure that they don't get scratched when you put something in the truck bed.

Bumper:

The factory bumper brackets on the old Chevy pickups typically drop down. Since the Raybestos Chevy is a lowered truck, Jeff and his crew had to modify the bumper brackets to come straight out.

Hood Emblem:

Finally, a Raybestos emblem can be found on the side of the hood. The emblem is of our vintage logo and was CNC machined out of aluminum.
