Drilled Wells With a Holding Tank (Cistern)

An Explanation of Our Holding Tank System, Why We Have It, And How It Works!

In this video I go over a brief description of what a concrete holding tank is, and how it can help a your slow producing well keep up with your household usage.

Be aware anytime you're looking to purchase a property, if there's a holding tank (cistern) on the property, there's a chance the well doesn't produce enough water to keep up with the household usage. Exceptions to this can be farming or gardening operations or properties with large gardens, that are filling the cistern with rain water for irrigation purposes.

If your in a new build situation, a holding tank is a viable option for building the reservoir of a well that does not produce fast enough, and isn't deep enough to provide adequate storage volume.

Always research local well data before you decide whether to go with a drilled or a dug well. I would suggest that if you're researching your area for a well on your new build, and the water in your area is historically slow producing, and close to surface, a dug well might be a better solution for you than a drilled well.

The diameter of a 30"-36" dug well quickly surpasses the total holding capacity of a drilled well with a 6" casing that is much deeper. you can google the "volume of a cylinder" to quickly play around with well volume calculations in cubic feet and then convert them into gallons.

In the example of our home, our 75' deep Drilled Well with a 6" casing has a max holding capacity of 14.73 cubic feet (multiply by 7.48 for gallons) = 110 gallons.

A Dug Well with a 36" wide well tile, Dug 20' deep, has a max capacity of 141.37 cubic feet (multiply by 7.48 for gallons) = 1057.44 gallons!

In this example, the Dug Well at 20' deep almost surpasses the holding capacity of our 75' deep drilled well, plus the 1000 gallon holding tank!

I hope this was useful for everyone, thanks for watching!
