Potatoes are a fast and easy crop to plant in your backyard garden. They end up being more of a “plant-it-and-forget-it” type of vegetable for me, as I don’t seem to get a lot of pest pressure or diseases… though they do exist. The biggest concern for potato care is usually water, but I live where draughts are a pretty regular summer occurrence. You may not have the same issue where you live.

The best part is that they grow almost anywhere, as long as they have enough soil and sun. You can grow them in a garden bed, laundry basket, in cloth bags (like I do), or even in recycled feed bags with drainage in the bottom.

The steps on how to plant potatoes are pretty simple:

1. Get seed potatoes earlier in the spring (and yes, you can plant your old potatoes from the store, though you should make sure they haven’t been sprayed with growth inhibitors—organic is best).

2. Cut them into pieces with a few eyes in each.

3. Once your soil temps reach 55F degrees consistently, lay them on around 6 inches of soil with any amendments (I used alfalfa pellets for nitrogen).

4. Cover with an inch or two of compost.

5. Keep watered and wait for sprouting.

6. Once they get around 6 inches tall, hill up more soil or compost around the stem.

7. Keep doing this until the plants start to die back, usually before your frost period.

8. Cure in a cool, dry place.
