In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte planed to invade England, for this, he elaborated a plan that required the use of the Franco-Spanish fleet, commanded by the French Vice Admiral Villeneuve.

However, on 22nd July 1805, the Franco-Spanish fleet faced the British fleet in the vicinity of Cape Finisterre. The victory of the British in this battle meant the abandonment of Napoleon's plans to invade England.

Three months later, Vice Admiral Villeneuve decided to leave for Trafalgar with the combined fleet, due to the intentions of the French emperor to replace him. Unfortunately, the Franco-Spanish fleet met the British fleet, under the command of Vice Admiral Nelson, near the coast of Cape Trafalgar.

The Franco-Spanish defeat at Trafalgar gave the British mastery of the seas during the 19th century. For the French, it meant the complete abandonment of any idea of invasion into Britain. For the Spanish, on the other hand, this defeat presented a weakening in their fleet, which would have repercussions in their commercial and military traffic, as well as in the control over their American colonies.
