Some of the UK’s biggest retail heavyweights have issued a stark warning to Rachel Reeves, saying government tax policies could undermine living standards.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s and John Lewis – among other big retailers – argue that the mounting cost of doing business will drive up food inflation even faster.

In a letter to the Chancellor, the businesses – represented by the British Retail Consortium trade body – said that government policy has already added £7bn to their costs.

They warn that food prices, which had begun to ease, are now “once again climbing”, with the BRC forecasting food inflation to hit six per cent later in the year.
