Using an anterior view of the abdomen, in this video we explore the anatomy of the duodenum - a very important structure of the gastrointestinal tract and the first of the three segments of the small intestine. We also explore some of the structures surrounding the duodenum.

The duodenum is located between the stomach and the jejunum - the jejunum being the second segment of the small intestine. Specifically, the duodenum is attached to the pylorus portion of the stomach. This initial portion of the small intestine measures about 20 to 25 cm in length. So what does it do? The primary function of the duodenum is to receive partially digested food from the stomach, allowing it to begin absorbing nutrients.
