In October 2019, I was fortunate to visit the spectacular Rani Ki Vav stepwell located in the ton of Patan, Gujarat, about two hours drive north of Ahmedabad. This site is featured on the reverse of the new hundred rupee note in India, yet few have given it a second glance when they use the note. But in real life, this UNESCO recognised World Heritage Site is a stunning reminder of the architectural and sculptural prowess of the medieval Chaulukya dynasty of Gujarat. And it has a remarkable story, a story of survival, unpillaged and unravaged by invaders or colonialists like so many other sites across India and a reminder of India's tremendous Hindu and Indic heritage.
