Harvesting Edible Sassafras Root For Making Tea

Описание к видео Harvesting Edible Sassafras Root For Making Tea

Sassafras root is commonly used for teas and root beers, however, sometimes it can be a challenge to dig up the root of a tree. In this video you'll see one of my favorite ways to harvest the root, and afterwards we'll make some tea out of them.

Sassafras is rather common in the Eastern United States and can grow to a variety of heights. Usually though you will find them under 20-25 feet tall. The root, leaves, and bark can all be used for a variety of food items, most notably tea. The tea not only tastes good but is medicinal as well.

Some of the medical uses of the tea include; blood purification, high blood pressure, Gout, rheumatism, kidney and liver ailments, and more. Safrole, a chemical compound naturally occurring in Sassafras, is touted as being toxic and causing Cancer. Which it is toxic, just not as toxic as you might think. However, it is degraded by boiling. So boiled teas have much less, if any, Safrole inside of them. The tea I make in this video is boiled, not steeped.
