A new stock market for start-ups in Korea is now up-and-running.
Operators hope this new over-the-counter market will eventually help startups prosper and fuel robust growth.
Kim Min-ji introduces to us the KRX Startup Market.

An over-the-counter stock market for promising startups has kicked off in Korea to help facilitate raising funds and allow investors to buy and sell shares.

"It's called the KRX Startup Market,... or KSM,... and operators are hoping it will serve as a gateway for startups looking to become part of bigger markets like KONEX and KOSDAQ.”

A total of 37 firms have registered for now,... and the market will be focused more on tech-intensive startups,... unlike other markets that have targeted unlisted large companies or medium-sized firms.
On the KSM,... startups are required to raise funds through crowd-funding programs online,… or hold recommendations from state-run financial entities,... like Korea Development Bank.

"One of the government's main policies was fostering startups and as a result 30-thousand are up and running. But until now company listings were focused on small-and-medium-sized companies,... so we have developed a new startup eco-system so that firms in their infancy can also establish a stronger footing."

While the new market will indeed offer an arena for startups to attract capital and get a better starting,... experts say more needs to be done in order for the market to be fully utilized and for the enthusiasm to not fizzle out.

"Because of the small size of the market, it's easy for startups to enter,... but it also means that they can fail easily due to high risks. Investors need to be notified of what risks exist and how they can better counter them through analyst reports or regulatory filings, so they are not discouraged from trading."

On top of that,... analysts say the success of KSM will depend on how it differentiates itself,... by clearly establishing its image as a market for tech-intensive stocks, so that it does not overlap with others.
