The HCPLive editorial team sat down with Prashant Tailor, MD, a retina fellow at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, to discuss his recent study. Tailor and colleagues used an AI large language model to transcribe and simplify ophthalmologists' notes for easy communication with patients and across specialties: despite a predicted margin of error, Tailor indicates that the results are promising. A good number of participants showed a significant level of acceptance, and the majority of the AI's errors took less than a minute to correct. While Tailor acknowledges that these issues need to be addressed going forward, they are also typical of AI systems, and he and his team are optimistic that AI may be more widely adopted into ophthalmology and medicine at large.

"These new protocols could be applied to any niche field, especially subspecialty medicine, in the retina clinics or the glaucoma clinics or the cornea subspecialty clinics...you're diving down not just into ophthalmology, you're diving down into a niche field."
