Tucked away at the far end of an industrial state, in a surreal yet somehow peaceful location is Birkenhead Priory.

It’s one of those places you wouldn’t know existed, yet the building holds significant historical importance. Widely Reported to be the oldest standing building in Merseyside, the site comprises the remains of the medieval priory, the priory chapter house and what remains of St Marys Church.

Founded in circa 1150, the monks of this Benedictine monastery looked after travellers for nearly 400 years and even supervised the first regulated “Ferry ‘cross the Mersey” up to the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538.
