Today I visited the amazing California Science Center in Los Angeles, and it was one of the most fascinating experiences. Inside the museum I explored an incredible collection of rare earth minerals, crystals, gemstones, and diamonds from different parts of the world.

The first thing that caught my attention was the raw diamond display. Many people only see diamonds after they are polished in jewelry stores, but here I saw how a natural diamond crystal actually looks in nature. A single crystal diamond looks like a transparent or slightly cloudy octahedron shape, almost like two pyramids joined together. Some were small, but some diamonds in the collection were extremely valuable, even 100-carat size rough stones. Seeing a diamond like that in raw form is unbelievable because a diamond that big could later be cut into many high-value gemstones used in luxury jewelry.

I also saw gold flakes and natural gold specimens. Instead of the gold bars we usually see in movies, natural gold in rocks appears as thin shiny flakes or veins embedded inside quartz stones. When light hits them, the gold shines beautifully. These tiny flakes are actually how gold is first discovered in nature before it is refined.

Another mind-blowing part of the exhibit was the huge crystal specimens. Some of these crystals weighed hundreds of kilograms, with a few specimens estimated to be over 500 kg. These giant crystals form deep inside the Earth over millions of years under extreme heat and pressure. Seeing crystals that big really shows the power of geological processes.

Some of these minerals are extremely rare and are part of the rare-earth element family, which are important not only for jewelry but also for modern technology, electronics, aerospace, and renewable energy.

One of the most interesting things I learned is that diamond jewelry and gemstone jewelry start from these natural crystals. Jewelers cut and polish stones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires into different shapes such as round, princess, oval, emerald cut, and cushion cut. After cutting and polishing, they are set into gold, platinum, or silver jewelry to create rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.
Seeing these minerals in their natural raw form really changes how we look at gemstones. What starts as a rough crystal deep inside the Earth eventually becomes a luxury diamond ring or beautiful gemstone necklace.

This museum visit was truly mind-blowing because the collection included extremely rare minerals, giant crystals, natural gold specimens, and raw diamonds from around the world. Some of these minerals are millions of years old and are among the most valuable natural treasures on Earth.
