Sufi Poet Ameer Khusro:

Hazrat Ameer Khusro (ra), often called the Parrot of India, was not only a legendary poet, musician, & philosopher but also one of the greatest disciples of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (ra). His poetry expressed a heart immersed in love for the Divine & his Sheikh. Khusro pioneered an artistic language that blurred boundaries between earthly romance & heavenly devotion, captivating both common people & spiritual elites.

Khusro’s genius was his ability to clothe the mysteries of Divine Love in the language of human romance. To the layman, his words seemed songs of longing, but to seekers, they opened doors to Divine secrets & the companionship of saints. His Qawwali still carry the fragrance of devotion across centuries.

The Romance:

One of the boldest aspects of Khusro’s (ra) writing was his use of human romance to describe devotion to God & his Sheikh. The beauty of a beloved, the anguish of separation, & the joy of union all became metaphors for mystical truths. His aim was not to cheapen the sacred but to redirect worldly love toward real love of God, the Prophet ﷺ, & the saints. Suddenly, Divine love was no longer duty or fear, but irresistible attraction.

Role of His Master:

At the center of this Qawwali lies Khusro’s devotion to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (ra). For him, the Sheikh was the mirror reflecting God’s beauty. In “Apni Chhab Banayi Ke, Meiñ To Pee Ke Paas Gayi” (Creating my reflection, I went to my Beloved), he describes self-annihilation in the image of his master. Loving the Sheikh was loving God, & his poems reveal this Sufi reality.

Sarkar (ra)'s Commentary:

Hazrat Baba Shah Mehmood Yousufi (ra) often warned disciples against taking Khusro’s words superficially:

“The author speaks of purity & Divine secrets. But a layman hears only ‘Gori Gori Baiyaañ’ (fair white arms). Without explanation, people assume Saints wrote of worldly beauty, when in truth, they revealed Divine manifestations.”

Such Qawwali require intellect & guidance from saints. Without explanation, they appear as romantic songs; with knowledge, they shine as treasures of mystical truth.

Phrases & Context:

“Tinka Ho Toh TorD Duñ, Mose Preet Na TorDi Jaaye” — Worldly things can break, but Divine love is unbreakable.

“Apni Chhab Banayi Ke, Meiñ To Pee Ke Paas Gayi” — Self-annihilation (fana), surrendering one’s identity at the Sheikh’s feet.

“Chaap Tilak Sab Chheen Li Re, Moh Se Naina Milaa Ke” — Mystical unveiling; all pride vanishes through the Sheikh’s gaze.

“Do Nain Tere, Do Nain Mere — Jab Mile Toh Mil Ke Chaar Huwe” — A symbol of union where separation dissolves.

“Hei An-al-Haq – Haq, Magar Kehni Na Thi” — Reference to Mansur al-Hallaj (ra). The truth was real but dangerous to speak.

“Bal Bal Jaauñ Meiñ Tore Rang Rajwa” — A declaration of repeated surrender to the Sheikh’s colors of love.

“Gori Gori Baiyaañ, Hari Hari ChurDiyañ” — Misunderstood as romance. Hazrat Baba Shah Mehmood Yousufi (ra) explained it as purity & spiritual greenness, a Qur’anic symbol of connection to the Prophet ﷺ.

Zaheen & Mansoor:

The Qawwali also references Zaheen Shah Taji (ra), a 20th-century Sufi Sheikh. He explained Mansur al-Hallaj’s (ra) cry of “Ana al-Haq” (I am the Truth). Hallaj spoke from annihilation (fana), while Zaheen Shah said, “You are,” speaking from subsistence (baqa). This distinction shows the balance of Sufi expression.

Power of This Qawwali:

“Chaap Tilak Sab Chheen Li Re” is not merely a poem but an invitation into Divine love. By weaving human romance with mystical truths, Khusro drew listeners from worldly desire toward God. His Qawwali remain sung in shrines, gatherings, & concerts, still awakening seekers to Divine love centuries later.

Lastly:

Ameer Khusro (ra) stands as a master of spiritual poetry. His romance was not indulgence but a veil unveiling Divine beauty. This Qawwali reflects his devotion to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (ra), his knowledge of mystical secrets, & his gift for turning ordinary listeners into lovers of God.

As Hazrat Baba Shah Mehmood Yousufi (ra) emphasized, without guidance, these verses seem mere songs, but with knowledge, they shine as Divine pearls. Through lines simple yet oceanic, Khusro redirected love away from illusion & toward the eternal Beloved. This is the eternal gift of Sufi Qawwali.
