In my TEDx talk, “What Dentistry Teaches Us About Curbing Racism,” I explored the powerful lessons we can learn from an unexpected source—dentistry. But today, let’s delve deeper into a critical concept that transcends dental chairs and applies to our everyday lives: bystander intervention or to use the phrase I coined "call and -ism what it -ism".
Bystander Intervention: A Call to Action
We’ve all been there—the uncomfortable moment when someone utters a vile, hurtful remark. Maybe it’s a racist slur, a sexist joke, or an ableist comment. Our hearts race, and we grapple with a choice: Do we stay silent or take action?
Bystander intervention is that pivotal moment when we choose to step in, speak up, and disrupt harmful behavior. It’s not about being a hero; it’s about being human. Here’s why it matters:
1. The Power of Silence:
Silence perpetuates injustice. When we witness discrimination or hate speech and remain silent, we inadvertently condone it. Our silence becomes complicity.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
2. The Ripple Effect:
Bystander intervention creates a ripple effect. When one person speaks up, others are more likely to follow suit. Our collective voices amplify change.
Imagine a room where everyone calls out -isms for what they are—unacceptable. That’s a room transformed.
3. Naming the -Isms:
I coined the term “call an -ism what it -ism” because clarity matters. When we name racism, sexism, ableism, or xenophobia, we strip them of their power.
It’s not just a “difference of opinion.” It’s discrimination. It’s harmful. It’s wrong.
BE THE CHANGE. Remember, we’re not bystanders; we’re active participants in shaping our world. Let’s call out -isms for what they are—unacceptable. Let’s create a culture where kindness, empathy, and courage prevail.
So, the next time you witness hate, remember: Speak up. Do something. Be the change.
