One of the keys to success in VDI is all about getting user acceptance. A simple way to gain this acceptance is to implement and all-flash array. The problem is that the cost of an all-flash array can be at odds with another key to VDI success, lowering the cost per desktop. But as we explain in our latest StorageShort video, all-flash arrays can actually drive a lower cost per desktop while increasing virtual desktop performance.

All-flash arrays beat the cost per desktop challenge first by reducing the number of physical servers required to host the virtual desktop infrastructure. An all-flash array can deliver significantly more raw performance allowing a physical host to be fully utilized with a maximum number of virtual machines.

Second all-flash arrays enable capacity optimization features like deduplication, compression, thin provisioning and linked clones. Normally these features impact performance too significantly, but an all-flash array has such excess performance that the can be applied liberally without performance impact. These features also allow the economic use of persistent desktops, which allow users to customize their virtual experience, which again increases the odds of user acceptance.
