A protest against severe air pollution in Delhi turned violent at India Gate on Sunday. Protesters, reportedly from left-wing organizations, clashed with Delhi Police after being denied permission to demonstrate at the C-Hexagon. According to a police official, 'We requested them that many of the ambulances and the medical people are behind them and they required the emergency movement. But they did not listen'. The situation escalated when demonstrators, holding posters of Maoist commander Madvi Hidma, who was killed in an encounter on November 18, 2025, broke through barricades and used pepper spray on police personnel. The protest occurred as Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the 'very poor' to 'severe' category, with levels as high as 442 in Anand Vihar and 444 at DTU Delhi. Police have detained some protesters and are pursuing legal action.
