At 40, healthy and athletic, Charu Raheja dismissed a severe headache as a migraine. A week later, doctors found blood on her brain—a rare arteriovenous malformation (AVM) had caused a stroke. Facing risky open-brain surgery that could leave her unable to walk or talk, she found Dr. Ricardo Hanel, who performed a minimally invasive procedure instead.
After surgery, Raheja couldn't move her right side or speak English—only Portuguese and Hindi. She'd lost her memory entirely, including her daughters' childhoods and her own identity. At a meditation retreat, a sign reading "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken" sparked her journey back.
