(8 Jul 2014) Thousands of Iraqis who have fled their hometown of Talafar on Tuesday boarded vehicles to take them to Irbil after days of waiting at the Khazer Crossing.
Many of them are Turkmen who say their city has been taken over by the militant group calling itself the Islamic State.
"The terrorists came to us and they had weapons and everything. We couldn't face them. They were sectarian," said one man Zainabdeen.
Men said they had been waiting for five days in poor conditions and under the sun.
The Mayor of Khabat said he had only just been given permission to let the people cross into into Iraq's largely autonomous Kurdish region and make their way to Irbil airport.
