Shell Starship 3.0 officially moved from concept to application. In this episode of On The Road, we caught up with Shell during a practice weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the Starship was preparing to haul the Pennzoil Technical Inspection Trailer for the 2025 IndyCar Series.

It's far more than a flashy prototype. Starship 3.0 runs a Cummins X15N natural gas engine and has already proven its efficiency in a 2023 demonstration run, covering 890 miles with a gross weight of 80,000 lbs., achieving 9 mpg diesel-gallon-equivalent. That same engine now powers the truck across the country, stop to stop, carrying full loads while showing what’s possible with today’s tech.

We went inside the truck, spoke with Shell’s team, and looked at the aerodynamic features—like camera-based mirror systems and trailer skirts—as well as the latest Shell lubricants, coolants, and greases working behind the scenes to support the drivetrain.

Starship 3.0 also fits into IndyCar’s larger sustainability strategy. Shell already supplies the series with renewable racing fuel. Now, it’s helping to reduce emissions on the support side too.
