A longtime passion project for heavyweight action star and acclaimed writer-director Sylvester Stallone is, of all things, a biographical feature film concerning legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe, the grandfather of the macabre, the author of such iconic Gothic tales as The Fall of the House of Usher, The Man of the Crowd, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Masque of the Red Death, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, and The Raven among many others. The life and times of the 19th century American poet and short story writer has fascinated Stallone for decades, having first written the script all the way back in the 1970's and attempting for years to get it off the ground. The closest it came to happening was in the mid-to-late-2000's, with Stallone directing from his own script for Avi Lerner's Millennium Films, having worked together on the fourth Rambo film. Stallone courted Robert Downey, Jr. for the titular role, who praised the script and was receptive to the idea. When discussing his vision for the project, Stallone stated that he wanted to focus on a muted color texture for sequences set in present day, and when delving into the recesses of Poe's mind, to see the creations of his stories as they unfold in his subconscience, they were to be portrayed in muted colors with vivid contrast. Alas, the project has still yet to become a reality, as producers in Hollywood were much more interested in making more action films with Stallone, less so with a Poe biopic.
