Subtractive Synths - Comparing FX

Built in FX have little to do with subtractive as a method but are very important in an instruments "character" and final sound. Of course many people will tell you to always turn the built in FX off and work with other plugins in your DAW for the sake of cohesion but I personally think that’s a little wasteful. Developers often design FX that specifically pair well with their instrument and while you should still use some cohesion techniques in mixing (to bring the synth to the same party as everything else) using the built in FX is a good way to distinguish one synth from another. We’ll look and listen to several examples where using the built in FX judiciously can pay off big time.
