Syria has held its first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, a landmark moment in its turbulent political history. Vote counting began in several districts on Sunday, with results expected later in the day. Interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa called the event a “historic moment” in Syria’s reconstruction, but observers and rights groups are questioning its legitimacy. Out of 210 seats in the People’s Assembly, one-third were directly appointed by al-Sharaa, and the rest were filled through electoral colleges rather than public voting. Elections in Suwayda and Kurdish-led regions were postponed indefinitely amid tensions with Damascus. Analysts argue the process favours loyalists and entrenches the new ruling elite, offering little hope for real democracy. With no political parties or campaigns permitted, many describe it as Syria’s first “taste of a vote” in six decades—symbolic but far from free. The new parliament will serve for 30 months, tasked with stabilising governance and preparing for eventual popular elections. Whether this marks genuine political renewal or a carefully managed transition remains deeply uncertain.
