A bunion is a bump that forms at the base of the big toe joint. This happens when the big toe angles in toward the second toe. This pushes on the base of the big toe which pushes on the first metatarsal (the bone below the big toe) and causes a bump on the big toe joint where they come together. This angulation is called a bunion deformity and is also known as hallux abducto valgus.

Bunions themselves are not inherited but the foot structure that leads to bunions is often hereditary. There is no evidence that shoes cause bunions, although the wrong shoes can make existing bunions more painful. Bunion deformities are progressive. In many cases, treatment can slow or stop the progression of bunions and help prevent further joint damage or the need for surgery.
