Creating Community | Larry Wilmore on Street You Grew Up On

This week on Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington and Larry Wilmore cruise to Pomona, California, where we visit Larry’s childhood home on Morrison Street. Larry grew up in a middle-class Black neighborhood with his mother, father, and his 5 siblings. Larry has always found refuge in entertainment, whether it was through countless hours of TV or entertaining others with stories and impressions. It has always been his way of escaping reality and creating his own world. This feeling would only heighten for Larry after a magical moment at Universal Studios with his father and experiencing the behind-the-scenes world of entertainment. Larry eventually found community in the theater world and made the stage his home. He still channels his curious inner child who wanted to be an astronaut, in his investigative approach in helping performers and writers craft their stories. It’s his superpower of active listening that makes him the incredible person and creator that he is today.
