This means that the earliest iterations of Mickey Mouse and certain elements from these films are now available for public use, remixing, and adaptation. However, it's important to note that only the specific appearance of Mickey from these early works is in the public domain. This version of Mickey is distinct in appearance, being more rat-like and without pupils in his eyes, unlike the modern version of Mickey Mouse that most people recognize.

Disney retains copyright over newer versions of Mickey Mouse, including significant alterations made to the character's appearance over time, such as giving him bigger ears, pupils, and different clothing. Additionally, while the original Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, Disney still holds trademark rights. This means that new works using Mickey Mouse should not mislead consumers into thinking that they are produced, endorsed, or affiliated with Disney.

It's crucial to emphasize that only the specific, original version of Mickey Mouse from 1928 is available for free use, and that creators should be mindful of not infringing on Disney's ongoing trademark rights.
