Fatmucket mussels are native to Mn. I filmed these in shallow areas of the Wild Rice River in Mn. during a late summer through mid-September. The water level in the river was low and also clearer than in early spring or after heavy rains.
A little info on them....
Mussels living in lakes and rivers filter oxygen and tiny plankton and nutrient particles from water, cleansing the water in the process. They do this by drawing water through their incurrent siphon, moving water over their gills, and then passing the water out through their excurrent siphon. Oxygen is absorbed through gills, and food in the water, mostly particulate organic matter and phytoplankton is carried to the mussel's mouth by tiny hair-like cilia located on their gills. Mussels do have a muscular foot that enables them to move around which also helps them adjust to slow declines in water levels. Mussels can live for a long and some even several decades and in some instances a century or more spending much of their life in a small area of a lake or stream bed.
