Five people were fatally shot and a sixth beaten to death in a rare incidence of gun violence in Shanghai on Saturday afternoon.

A 62-year-old employee of a private chemical factory in the Baoshao area allegedly beat a colleague to death using tools that were used at the plant after the two engaged in an argument over financial issues.

The suspect, identified only by his surname Fan, then retrieved a shotgun he was keeping illegally and took an unlicensed taxi to Zhoupu, according to the South China Morning Post. There, he shot and killed the driver of the taxi, then drove the vehicle back to Baoshan, where he stopped at a military compound and fatally shot a sentry. After taking the sentry's gun, Fan drove back to the chemical plant, where he used the shotgun to kill three more colleagues, including the plant's boss, surnamed Li.

Police who were alerted to the plant, presumably after the first killing, overpowered Fan following the final three shootings at around 11:15 p.m.
