Описание к видео Sidebar: Hacking YouTube's Algorithm

There's nothing even remotely related to BitBurner in this. I won't be mad if you ignore this video and watch something else. You might want to catch the first five minutes or so, as I lay out my vision for the purpose of this channel, and why I chose to make videos in the style that I did.

One of our viewers cared enough to post a couple of really helpful ideas, which he didn't have to do, and he did without knowing that I've spent the last twenty years of my career focusing specifically on the algorithms that power Google, Amazon, etc.

This is the deepest dive into exactly how the YouTube algorithm works I could possibly do, explaining how statistics, data science, computer science, and machine learning interact to determine "what videos end up in your sidebar." I also talk in depth about the human factors: how roles are divided between engineers who implement tracking vs data scientists who tweak the algorithm, and the limits to which each one can improve, or hurt, the algorithm, and what sorts of skills each role requires. I've never actually worked at Google, which is nice, because it means I can say all this stuff without their lawyers slapping me with my non-disclosure and gagging me. I figured most of this out from testing, experimenting, picking up tidbits overheard at bars, and assuming Google's engineers started from first principles and wrote a theoretically perfect algorithm.

I have no expectation that any of you will sit through this esoteric lecture. But it is here, if you care: a distillation of seven years of university, thirty years of coding, and twenty years specializing in this exact topic. I just ask that you forgive the faults you find in my videos; I am neither a professional stage actor nor a professional educator. I'm a technical specialist.

Why's that matter? Because a stage actor could deliver the most entertaining, perfectly scripted, well-edited multicamera production on Google's algorithm and tell you nothing you don't already know. A professional educator is practiced in speaking to someone at exactly your current level of understanding, but they've never actually touched it, so they don't have a personal grip of the scope, the mess, the challenges, the hacks you can get away with and the hacks that'll screw you. The "book version" they teach is important to know, but the edge cases never get covered by the book, because the book would need to be 10,000 pages long.

Me? For better or for worse, I live amongst the edge cases. My channel's a reflection of that; nothing more, and nothing less.
