This video was originally uploaded on my other channel, Mysterious Magpie - but I figure that as a literary adaptation it will fit just as well on this channel. I'm also uploading it because as a sort of 'companion piece' to the Enhanced TV Audio of Goodnight Mister Tom already on this channel...

The late 1990s were a golden era for audio books on tape cassette. Among other more 'experimental' releases, several films and television programmes were released as specially audio-narrated presentations. These weren't examples of ordinary audio-description, and were tailored to each individual production, so that the narration felt like it was part of the original film or TV show. These 'Enhanced Audio' versions didn't appear for very long, and quickly became somewhat obsolete for a variety of reasons. Nonetheless, I wish there were more of them out there.

I already uploaded the audio version of Goodnight Mister Tom starring John Thaw (recommended), and now here is the enhanced audio version of the ITV miniseries of Rebecca. The lavish score works particularly will with the specially-written narration, and the cast - which includes Charles Dance and Diana Rigg (long before their combative scenes in Game of Thrones) - have voices that work very well in audio too. In particular the heroine is played by Emilia Fox, whose mother had previously played the character in an earlier TV version...
