The “State Anthem of the Russian Federation” is the national anthem of Russia. Its powerful melody was originally written by Alexander Alexandrov for the Soviet Union’s anthem in 1944. The Soviet version, with lyrics by Sergei Mikhalkov and Gabriel El-Registan, replaced “The Internationale” as a more patriotic, distinctly Soviet song. Later revisions in the 1970s softened wartime themes and removed references to Joseph Stalin.

After the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Russia briefly replaced the anthem with “Patrioticheskaya Pesnya” by Mikhail Glinka—an instrumental piece without lyrics. However, this anthem was widely criticized for lacking emotional impact and failing to inspire national pride, especially among athletes during international events.

When Vladimir Putin became president in 2000, he supported restoring Alexandrov’s melody with new, modern lyrics by Mikhalkov. This decision sparked debate, but it was ultimately approved by the State Duma and Federation Council in December 2000. The revived anthem officially became the national anthem of Russia on December 25, 2000, and was performed for the first time with lyrics at the Great Kremlin Palace on December 30, 2000.

Despite early criticism—including from former president Boris Yeltsin, who saw it as too reminiscent of the Soviet past—the anthem was meant to bridge Russia’s history, honoring both the Soviet legacy and the new Russian state. Over time, it became an accepted and unifying symbol for the nation.
