Mahanavami Dibba

the Mahanavami Dibba is a beautiful stone platform located within the Royal Enclosure of Hampi.

In Kannada language dibba means a mount. This north facing structure was built during the Vijayanagara period.
King Krishnadevaraya constructed this monument in 1513 AD to commemorate his victory over Udaygiri.

Hampi was the capital of Vijaynagara empire.

King of Vijayanagar used to celebrate the festival of Dasara here

During Maha Navami celebrations the Goddess Durga is worshipped in her avatar of Mahishasuramardhini.

It is believed that ,this structure was used by the kings as a stage to watch the celebration of the nine-day long splendid Mahanavami festival.

The 12 meters high Dasara Dibba consist of a massive square granite base in three diminishing tiers the lowest being 40 metre square and the topmost 24 metre square.

The walls are covered with auspicious carvings of horses ,elephants, warriors, caravans, hunting scenes, dancers, musicians and many other royal cultural scenes of the by-gone culture.

The platform has two stairways to reach the top - one situated at the front and the other at the back of the structure. The front stairway is decorated with ornate carvings of elephants, horses, soldiers, and processions.

The top of the platform provides a splendid view of the surrounding areas.

It is on the must-visit list of most tourists because of its ornate carvings and historical importance.
