Gordon Young was an American organist and composer of both organ and choral works. Young was born in McPherson, Kansas. His undergraduate degree in music was earned at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. Following that he was a scholarship pupil of organist Alexander McCurdy at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the 1940s, and later he received his Doctor of Sacred Music from Southwestern in 1964. Young received 18 consecutive composition annual awards from ASCAP. His published works total over 800, and a number of his church anthems such as his Now Sing We Joyfully unto God’’, and his organ compositions such as his Prelude in Classic Style, have become standard repertoire. Young died October 2, 1998 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

Gordon Young was een Amerikaanse organist en componist van zowel koor- als orgelwerken. Young werd geboren in McPherson, Kansas in de Verenigde Staten. Zijn Bachelor in de muziek behaalde hij aan het Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas USA. Vanaf 1940 volgde hij lessen bij organist Alexander McCurdy aan het Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Later behaalde hij zijn doctoraat in de geestelijke muziek aan het Southwestern College in 1964. Young won met zijn composities achttien opeenvolgende keren de jaarlijkse prijzen van de American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Zijn meer dan 800 gepubliceerde werken, van kerkliederen zoals ‘Now Sing We Joyfully unto God’ tot orgelwerken zoals bijvoorbeeld Prelude in Classic Style zijn tot standaard repertoire gaan behoren. Gordon Young stierf op 2 oktober 1998 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.
