Isaac Newton’s theory of optics is a system that describes the behavior of light quantitatively. It was first published in 1672 and is the mature product of centuries of work by astronomers, mathematicians, and natural philosophers.

Light wave - Light can be thought of as a wave, or it can be thought of as particles. The two interpretations are not mutually exclusive (and are actually complementary) because they address different aspects of the light's nature. The wave model describes a phenomenon called interference and diffraction in detail; it successfully demonstrates how waves behave over many cycles or distance. On the other hand, the particle model explains how light reacts to obstacles in its path by 'bouncing' or gaining energy from them - which affects our understanding of reflection and transmission through transparent materials like water or glass.

Photons - Light is made up from photons, which are tiny packets that travel in straight lines at 186 thousand miles per second (speed limit for space).

In 1665, Newton published "Opticks and laid the foundations for modern optics.

This book is a result of his studies of light and color, which he carried out from around 1660 to 1672.

In Opticks, Newton set forth in mathematical language his theory of the nature of light and explained how light interacts with objects and how it can be used to create images.

Newton's work on the optical properties of prisms, reflection, and refraction is considered one of his great achievements.

In this book he argues that white light is made up of different colored components (later called wavelengths) but by mixing two or more constituents together these cannot be separated again.
